CANADIAN REGULATORS SEEK FEEDBACK TO UPDATE FEEDS REGULATIONS 

On August 3, 2012, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) announced that it was seeking industry feedback on modernizing Canada's Feeds Regulations. The CFIA is reviewing the Feeds Regulations with the objective of developing risk- and outcome-based regulations in order to continue to protect consumers and resources, reduce regulatory burdens, reflect changes in science, and support innovation. Industry may comment by completing an online survey, email, fax, or mail. The deadline for comments is October 5, 2012.

Background

The Feeds Regulations were last subject to review in the early 1980s and were put into effect in 1983. Since 1983, the Feeds Regulations have been subject to piecemeal amendment to address specific issues (e.g., novel feeds, BSE, medicated feeds). In order to update the Feeds Regulations to continue to provide for safety, while allowing industry to innovate, the CFIA is seeking input on the following topics:

• Safeguarding the Food Supply;
• Safeguarding the Animal Resource Base;
• Consumer Protection Considerations; and
• Market Access Considerations.

This feedback process is the second phase in the CFIA's multi-year, five-phase plan to update the Feeds Regulations.
